I woke up this morning to head to the shop in order to organize for the upcoming week as I continue to restore my 1996 Bronco I bought last month.
Song on my radio, was an oldie, but an oh so goodie—this one👇:
Wisdom from Perry, Georgia.
At any rate, Amor Fati is a Stoic saying to accept one’s fate, and literally means love of one’s fate. It means you should accept all that comes to you. I will tie this up in a nice bow at the end.
Leland Flood Zone
As noted here, Leland has decided to table the flood zone ordinances for a while. Here is the kicker:
Had the ordinance passed — as unanimously suggested by Leland planning board recently — it would have gone into effect immediately; however, it would not impact homes already built. Though if the structures faced significant damage in the future, homeowners would have to rebuild to the town’s new parameters.
Reminds me of dumb So Cal ordinances now making all those people who lost their homes, washed out—and now they are selling. They cannot rebuild because they cannot afford the new ordinances.
For homeowners who will remain here in Leland until their death, up your insurance to cover for this for it may come you will need it.
What killed the homeowners in Pacific Palisades, was, they were underinsured. Don’t let that happen to you. Most of Leland is, in reality, a swamp, and no amount of infill is going to change that reality.
That resident Democrat phacephag, McHugh, took to the press to make sure everyone knew that the change in the ordinance is just “common sense.” Government is here to save you, according to McHugh. Sure. Ask the people in Appalachia how that’s going for them.
Prepare for lawsuits as our unintelligent council members run headlong into this legal trap and new ordinance meant to “protect you.” Ugh.
Want to know what would have solved all this? For council members not to be greedy and build in flood zones by….ALLOWING FLOOD ZONE BUILDING IN THE FIRST PLACE. We are ruled by morons.
Don’t worry Leland resident, you will be picking up the tab.
Brunswick County Builds MORE
The county is building a new elementary school, and also more homes. More building is coming to Leland, Bolivia, and assorted other coastal towns like Sunset. Fun!
The one in Bolivia is going to make the 211 even more of a parking lot than it already is.
The one in Leland will make the NC17 a parking lot….with more wrecks.
These sort of developments are not conducive to the ability of the infrastructre to handle the vast increased demand upon it. But, same old story, our local elites will push forward anyway. There’s money to made in these swamps.
However, one development has been halted….for now.
Elections are Coming
Leland has competition for council member seats. Defeat McHugh. I am not sure who many of these candidates are, but let’s save that for another post. In other words, we have choice coming, and for all those who loathe the current council, now is your chance to oust these incompetents from it.
Your Fate
While it is possible to recover something of Leland’s drift, the fact that there remains a constant demand for space will not subside. What you see happening, is not going to end….until it does and it becomes Cleveland….or Detroit.
I can tell you I have several people who stop by and talk to me about my various shop projects. Usually it starts off with “it’s so damn hot” complaining about the weather.
Guess where they are from. Go ahead….guess.
I finally asked, “then why did you move here?” The answer: because my state has shitty politics.
Sigh. Why not move back? Hell no, they say. But, they hate the heat.
Leland is becoming exactly what you escaped from. But the weather here is the same it has always been. It should not come a shock.
I have one neighbor who has had enough, and is moving back to….Michigan. Love the guy, and I hope he thrives, but I could never move to that shitshow state. Personal choice.
Which, now brings us to the task at hand: accept your fate. If you stay in this area, may you Amor Fati it all the way. Accept what is coming and try to slow down the inevitable. You will lose, eventually, but you may not be around to see it to its conclusion. What personal lesson and good that comes from it will be personal to you. The Stoics say to accept it as good regardless.
It makes some sense, for the inexplicable events that happen to us, should be met with a sense of duty and learning of the lesson presented by whatever mishap.
But maybe the other old saying is also true: There is no fate but what we make.
Those who fall into the latter, will act. They will leave, or stay, or run for office, or…whatever their talent peacefully directs them to do.
Brunswick County is going to get worse—congestion, higher taxes, more accidents, less service, less owned space, etc.
What fate will you make in response? There’s only 2: leave or stay. Whatever fate you choose, only then does Amor Fati come into play.
OK...I enjoy reading your comments and I agree with most of what you highlight. However, call me and optimist but, we the citizens must somehow get unified to protect our settled neighborhoods and the growing communities around us by insisting that the infrastructure, the road systems, untilities and protective community services are in place to check and curb the growing sprawl that is taking over Brunswick County by properly with accurate perspective hold the real estate investors accountable for this balance. How do we do this?
What are the odds the GA will give us some relief on the down zoning law? I understand why the law was written but seems to me public safety is a greater concern. Development is an evolving issue and idealy our laws should evolve as well. McHugh and Carter are on the right side of this, although too little, too late to save their seats. Re-elect no one.
