I always pay more attention to what Leland is doing around the holidays. Why? Because they are usually up to no good around this time, as people are distracted with the upcoming festivities. It is a great time (for them) to push controversial things past voters without them really knowing it.
Leland is all of a sudden concerned about building houses in flood zones. Our resident wannabe actor, Bull McHigh (Democrat) states it with feeling and concern:
“Leland has been the leader in so many aspects of development throughout this region that this is an opportunity for us to grab a hold of that and say, ‘We’re not going to let that happen here,’ and hope that maybe everyone else follows suit,” council member Bill McHugh said at an agenda review meeting on Nov. 18.
The problem of course is this: Leland caused this problem already by allowing building in flood zones. Heck, the entirety of Waterford and Magnolia Greens WAS A FLOOD ZONE. Know what’s beneath your house? Sand and old tree stumps. I should know because I surfed the entire east coast in Brunswick, and this was all swamp in the 1990s.
Now all this is not necessarily a bad thing. The Romans filled in a lot of areas around Rome to build such things as the Colloseo. So, doing it right can be done, and of course, the Italians knew how to build shit.
But my point is this: when and why is Leland all of a sudden having a come to Jesus moment about building in flood zones? They say it is out of concern. And no one believes that Shitshow McHugh is really all that concerned about….us.
Sideshow McHugh, revealed the reason, it seems—to limit residential housing:
“If we take residential out of this completely, we’ve essentially solved the public safety issue without completely trampling on those issues that we’re going to run into,” McHugh said, referring to the probability of upsetting people over the limitation of their property rights.
YAY, no houses, but more coffin Apartments. That’s what Democrat concern looks like in Leland. So, more density, more traffic, and packing people in like sardines—THAT is the result of this new concern for flood zones.
“It’s almost like we’re putting people in a position where we can’t get them out,”
~Sluggo
Sluggo stated (above) the council actually put all of us in this position…who owns that? Sluggo, McHugh and the rest of the council of clowns.
Read the entire story I linked above. there seems to be some pressure from outside the town to do all this, so it is not really their concern that is the driving force. It is likely their ability to fuck things up that caused yet another agency greater than the council and say, “you guys are incompetent.” Agreed. While the council mouths words of things like, we are going to cut back on all development, we all know this is bullshit.
Mallory Creek is back in the news. The rezoning debacle continues, and their HOA once again does what HOA’s do—make bad decisions:
Ben Watts, a planner for the Town of Leland, presented site plans to the planning board Tuesday, for a multi-use development to bring 127 townhomes, 5,000 square feet of restaurant space, 15,000 square feet of retail and 10,000 square feet of office space to 31.5 acres near Mallory Creek Plantation.
“There’s more certainty on what kind of commercial we’re going to get. That’s not a gas station; it’s restaurant, office and retail,” Nicholas Newell, president of Mallory Creek Plantation Homeowners Association, told the board at Tuesday’s meeting. “So, that was one of the main driving forces behind why we felt this version — this rendition — of the plan was more appropriate than what we previously saw, which was just residential.”
Newell, you will recall, I noted, wants to be a part of the Leland council so bad, he would sell anything to get it.
It would be nice to have a gas station there, since, there is not one for miles. And it would help residents not drive as far for quick forgotten items….but who cares?! We have planning to do that suits the Leland growth plans, and there will be bike racks (which will hardly be used)!
You will note that the new plan includes coffin apartments (they are NOT townhomes) and then sedentary jobs that most people nearby will not frequent.
The importing of blue state, New Yorkization policies, continues in Leland.
In 100 years all this crap will be abandoned.
RIP to a once sleepy, but great town.
Didn’t Leland Town Council pass the resolution to take $1.5 million out the General Fund to do a land acquisition??
For a grand total of $7.9 million worth of land.
Interesting information as always. Going to miss your insightful commentary as we move into the election next year. Elections are the only way to stop these people. Until November we are just driving by the accident scenes and tsking.
