Welcome to a winter wonderland post! Enjoy the snow while it lasts.
Oh what to say about Leland’s ongoing Mallory Creek fiasco? As I noted here, the Mallory Creek modification of, you guesssed it, zoning, to allow for more residential coffin apartments, over the original zoning slated for business, has hit a snag.
But it is not apparent why it is delayed.
Leland town council just says that they want more public input on the project—a project that will be built by DR Horton, one of the cheapest and worst rated builders. That’s right, the corporate company slated to build those coffins in Mallory Creek is DR Horton. They have an awful reputation.
See here:
And here:
You want some entertainment? Check out the DR Horton sucks website—yes a website totally dedicated to how DR Horton makes crappy “homes.” See Here.
The gist of the issue really, is the town council wants to build not homes, but lure in businesses they choose. This means what they want are 2 things: 1) more money (from the business taxes and spending), and 2) less people in single family homes because 2a) they want to become the new Wilmington.
The two most outspoken town council members who want more “business” (kinda like socialist planning) are McHugh (a democrat aspiring actor) and Sluggo (a Democrat aspiring Mayor).
Sluggo is playing the race card:
Carter was also critical of the developers’ communication with the community and governing groups that have been part of the project. She called out the team for touting how the proposed Gullah Geechee Heritage Trail will run through the property. The corridor is intended to highlight the Gullah Geechee, African descendants who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast and contributed much to Cape Fear’s history, cuisine and culture.
Oh and she makes her race a part of it, like she has special privilege, or something:
“The idea is not just to have a bike-ped trail, we have bike-ped trails all over the place [ed. this is a lie], and we have plans for them to reach our communities; the idea is to capture the history and the culture,” Carter said. “Quite frankly — and this is a point of personal privilege here — for you to say that we’re running the Gullah Geechee trail through something that’s named plantation — that’s troubling.”
LOL. What a complete moron. I now have to say something about just how much of one she is.
The only way Democrats can win is to divide, but I am not so sure that politics works any more. But, Sluggo is hilarious for her idiocy because, she has no clue that blacks owned slaves in eastern NC. Oh I am not being flippant. The eastern part of NC was home to one of the largest black slaveholders in the nation, John Carruthers: see here. Naturally, he was A Democrat. I see a pattern forming.
What Sluggo seems pissed off about is that she can’t shake down DR Horton for money. If only they would call so she could negotiate a shakedown for a muh left wing cause. Seriously, this is the Democrat party, a party who still has not apologized for slavery. It is quite obvious Veronica Carter has no idea about the histoy of NC, and what’s worse is she does not care to. Does she know her party drowned blacks in the Cape Fear River in 1898? Unlikely.
But back to the story: According to the story I linked above, some people in Mallory Creek feel like they have not been heard. But I thought their HOA chair already spoke about this and said…hey this looks good!?
So, the occasion of the fake additional hearing is to see if anyone from Mallory Creek will show up.
What will happen then? Well if historical trends mean anything, Leland will then go right ahead and approve the project they already rezoned for. McHugh and Sluggo will act irate about certain aspects, but, really, the development will pass with some small fake concessions being made. Leland council will then say in their actions: Thanks for voicing your opinions Mallory Creek, but we are going to do what we always intended to do.
Sure, McHugh and Sluggo will talk about the “lost revenue” of the commercial side of the project, and Sluggo will try to find something to cry about regarding raysism, but they will find another place to stick soon to be out of business, businesses and build a trail honoring something no one will really care about and few will actually use.
“Unless we want to become a bedroom town for Wilmington, I think we need to give strong consideration to make sure that our commercial base is improved,” planning board member Barbara Scott Akinwole said of the proposal in April 2024.
The residents of Mallory Creek are pretty much clueless about what is about to happen. If the comments in the press are any indication, what they want is…more amenities and a few small shops to…I dunno…loiter in. They do not understand that any small business of some boutique variety will not survive there. Ever been to the Waterford business center? It has a lot of high turnover, and already is starting to look like a hallowed out dying city center. When antique shops, and more health services, and churches taking over business spaces, death is coming.
Point is, a small HOA community cannot support businesses, just because they are a small community that wants a business. Markets matter, and demand matters.
The Mallory Creek residents have already lost the argument because what they are arguing for are things like, “we want another pool built,” and “DR Horton is not going to build us a pool, but we want one!”
Enjoy your defeat MC.
This is how we become the very place you left. There is no interest in the actual preservation of a limited government—everyone from the Leland council, to Mallory Creek loud voices—are interested in “what can I get out of this.” Frequently, people bring the same mistakes that ruined their home town and state with them. Meny such cases.
This all leads to corruption. Mallory Creek could have said something like, we want to preserve the way of life here, and build for strong families. That argument is missing from all the rhetoric on this. Their argument is simply, we want stuff, and we could not give two craps about the changing nature of the voters who will move into Leland. They are assenting to the continued malfeasance of the present Leland council.
Thanks Mallory Creek. You are literally voting for what is about to come.
So true. Leland council members including mayor are operating on their own behalf and not of the peoples. The people spoke up already back in Feb and March 2024. We do not want any more development and coffin apartments till the budget is cut, roads are paved , are expanded or fixed and the utilities are shown to support the already existing water and sewer system and electrical stations. The mayor and the council is taking comments from the developers and planning which have their own interest and their interests do not include the people who put them in office. We need RECALL!
