I am not going to spend too much time on this in the book, and as I was finishing up some touches on 1869, and moving into 1870, I ran across the Motley flap in Chernow—I was reviewing some things to make sure I did not miss anything factually. It sent me on a little bunny trail, which placed me in the year 1877.
For the record, Chernow’s is an awful book, not because of detail (which IS helpful), but because he clearly hates Grant—making wild assumptions and conclusions unsupported by real evidence. He is not an active reader or researcher. He uncritically drowns himself in the Democrat line all too often. It is irresponsible, and propagandistic. As I will demonstrate as a part of this post, Chernow is sympathetic to Grant’s jealous enemies.
