This Week in Leland’s Drift to the Left
Commercial Development, Drag Shows Cometh, Sluggo Blocks Everyone!
As noted at PCD here, the Leland Town Politburo is just having so much trouble trying to figure out how to limit single family housing, and build business. Keep in mind this is a money making desire for our good comrades on the council.
Why do they want businesses and not homes? Simple—2 reasons.
The first reason is because the town wants renters, not homeowners. Apartments good! The only caveat is if there is a section outside the limits that are, say, Landfall, then, and only then, single family million dollar homes good!
The second reason is that the town wants business because more business, = more sales tax revenue, and in NC cities get a share of sales tax revenue.
Of course, the council knows that their share of sales taxes is somewhat limited, but still, they do not want to lose their share of sales to, say, Wilmington. So, let’s not be fooled: Leland wants to keep its share of sales taxes they lose to the Democrat “republic” of Wilmington.
What’s worse, is that the elected and unelected officials in the town think they KNOW how and what businesses are needed, and they think they know where these businesses should be built.
How do they control that? zoning.
So comes the latest Brunswick Forest controversy. Owners of some property there want a change in rezoning from commercial to residential, so that more single family homes can be built.
Resident Democrats, Sluggo and McHugh were all into apoplexy at this point. What? We can’t have more homes, only apartments, and we need business!
She told the councilors the property discussed is located deep in a corner of Brunswick Forest and is not connected to nearby major thoroughfares. It’s adjacent to Mallory Creek Plantation and North Carolina Highway 133 (River Road).
Barefoot said, if residential land use is allowed, it would be considered moderate development.
“We determine where commercial is most appropriate,” Barefoot said. “So through our analysis, what we’ve determined is, because this is internal — and doesn’t have direct front end to Highway 133 — we do believe that residential would be a better option in this area.”
The problem: In recent months, Leland officials have expressed concern with not having enough commercial property in the region and even changed an ordinancein April to address it. The goal is to promote job and economic growth and maximize commercially zoned areas, as seen along Village Road and U.S. 17 — the latter where Brunswick Forest is located.
Just so you are clear: Leland politburo does not want any more retirees coming here: what they want is renters, and apartments, so they can build and support business. OK? Got it?
Honestly, give it up this once for the unelected “experts” at Leland, they are right that this area is more conducive to residential. But Sluggo and McMoron are not convinced. They need more commercial (and you should ask why THEY really want business in the area so bad and in that place).
And Sluggo let the cat out of the bag, by publicly admitting, “she” is engaged in a shakedown:
“And one of the things we’ve had is an increase in the number of people here and the need for commercial,” Carter said. “So I’m not sure I want to just give up the commercial without getting something back in return.”
This is corruption. A council member should NOT be publicly asking for “something in return” at any time, in any way. What she means is: if I allow this to be residential, I want commercial someplace else. What in the ever lovin’ halls of Fordham idiocy is this? Memo to Sluggo: you are supposed to be making judgments on what is good for the town, and not hold hostage the public interest because you think you know better and deserve something in exchange.
Sluggo’s submissive, McHugh, of course, agreed.
The general idea of property ownership is this: the person of the property gets the advantage in deciding what that property would be like. Therefore, the burden is on the public to prove that such use would be bad/harmful for the community in order to prevent that change. In this case, the Leland position is—we are not opposed, but we want something in return for our decision to grant you the change in ordinance. Shakedown.
Now as we have noted here, a person buying a property that is residential and changing it when that was the intent all along is a fraud to the neighbors (see Malmo Loop).
This is a bit different because, all of a sudden, the Leland council members (Sluggo and his submissive McHugh) are asking for something in return…got that? The merits of the case are all that should matter, but the Democrats on council want…PAYMENT. What form this “payment” takes is open for debate. But it is not an honest way for public representatives to act.
Seriously, the Leland Town politburo is becoming a longhouse.
Speaking of Longhouses, a piece in WHQR lauds Drag Queens coming to Brunswick county to entertain the Democrat party here.
At least it is not in schools.
The photos of events show an overwhelming majority of attendees are women. I leave all this up to you to determine what this is all about other than trying to change the culture of this county. The facts of this trend are not in favor of all the promotional material in this story, I am sorry to say.
Finally, Sluggo has now limited his twatter page to anyone who is not approved by….Sluggo. Oh No! Whatever shall we do?
It is rather remarkable, a public official cannot defend their crazy ideas, and has to block the deliberative process by masking their opinions.
SAD!
We need to get replacements for the entire Leland Town Council. They all must go.
Seriously. This was advertised in Leland beside the laundromat. Sick.
