Before we get to the latest issue at hand, let’s get our pronunciations correct. Top Sail beach is not as you (northerner) pronounce it, it sounds more like “top-sul” with a deemphasis on the p. Oh, I know, as a man from the WEST, I made this mistake too. So you are in good company.
And while we are at it, Whiteville, is not how you pronounce it. It is “why-vul.”
As I have already noted a long time ago, Kerr, is actually pronounce CAR so….learn the language. I had to, and embarrassed myself many as time over it until I learned.
Top Sail beach is a long and favorite haunt of mine, before the new bridge went in, and parking was free. It reminded me of the long strect of So-Cal beaches—lots of beach, and bitchin’ waves. I learned a lot there when I caught the “fever.” That fever is a surfing fever, and it has always nagged me.
Top Sail is increasing taxes by 20%. See story here. And then the Town Manager of Top Sail resigned, citing, among other things, “fiscal responsibility” as a reason for his departure.
Top Sail has been…what’s the word…greedy and exclusionist for a long time. WB did this ages ago. They hated the surfers showing up to a PUBLIC beach, and sought to limit that—making it their own beach. This ALWAYS happens when the oligarchs discover beach front living.
So, Top Sail follows suit here, is my guess. Too bad. It was such a dreamy place. Now it is on the way to Myrtle Beach Old Town.
So a treat for you, from 2001, and a video no longer available. SNC Surf used to post these all the time, and there was a message board that was frequented by Iceman, MalPaisTico, and the Wilmington famous Shea Lindon—sponger deluxe.
Enjoy. This is a trip to times past when Top Sail was….paradise.
It is so sad to see people come here, buy property, and then, change the traditions of this area to reflect their selfish desires.
At any rate, leave a comment.
Seems like only yesterday......
