I would start with Grant’s own memoirs. For a guy writing as death knocked on his door, it was masterful, and also interesting unlike most memoirs. I would also certainly read Scaturro’s small book. I can say that the two massive volumes by Calhoun and Chernow are atrocious—they pedal in libels used by Grant’s enemies and take them at face value as fact. McFeely also can be added here—a biographer who hated his subject. All these authors are essentially Woke propagandists—they essentially trope the Democrat attacks on Grant.
The decent tomes other than those already mentioned, come from Simpson, and White.
