In my last post on Grant and the Experts, I surmised Dana might have had it in for Grant for some reason, and speculated (without evidence) he might have been butt hurt about not receiving some government appointment.
Then I found this:
It is from the NY Trib.1 Isn’t this interesting? So he DID receive a nomination for a govt. post. It is quite obvious he did not accept it. Why?
Dana was attaq’d on all sides around this time. One came via an enemy from the Tribune (James Russell Young—a staunch Republican). Fun fact: Dana was fired from the Tribune at some point. None of that means Dana did something wrong to get fired. The Tribune was not exactly a great newspaper, though it had the ear and eyes of the elites of the day. However, Young was a quite decent and able chronicler of Republican thought.
So, when he sued Dana for libel, it caught my attention:
