Right to recall should be in the NC constitution for everyone but Iler's bill was never going to be a magic bullet. The 25% of the electorate requirement is too heavy a lift to make recall the answer. We need to win at the ballot box to remove this town council. Since spring I have been aggressively questioning my neighbors and while they are vaguely aware of the local issues they feel its so much better than "up north" or in the case of the lady recently transplanted from CA I met at the blood drive 2 hours ago, better than "out west". I expect the next town budget will help to motivate people, but so far a 52% tax increase in two years has had no detectable effect.
I should have added this: Let’s say it got out of Local gvt comte, it would still have to pass Rules. I am unclear whether it could have gotten past Rules. I do not know, but I offer this as an added precaution.
I will say this: The bill DID SCARE the shit out of the Leland town council. THAT is why they scaled back from 70%. Now I still think they should have gone revenue neutral, but it did have some effect and we should thank Iler for that at least.
FINALLY, we need competent people to run, not over opinionated people like me, but solid people who have the time and the smarts to hold the line.
